Five people have been taken to hospital after a house explosion in Llanbradach this evening.

Residents in Dan-y-Darren, of the Rise, rushed out with water and first aid moments after hearing a load bang at around 5.30pm.

Around half a dozen ambulances were in attendance as well as police, four fire engines, an aerial ladder and a water bowser.

A spokesman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, which sent two crews from Caerphilly and two from Aberbargoed, said it looked like an explosion had happened and that fire investigators had been called to find out more.

He said: “Firefighters worked really hard in hazardous conditions to stop the fire from spreading to other properties. Obviously our thoughts are with those affected.”

One person has been flown to hospital in Birmingham, while three people were taken to Morriston Hospital in Swansea and one to University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

A spokesman for Gwent Police said: “An explosion was reported at 5.33pm. There were five occupants at the address, all of which managed to escape.

“All five have injuries, including burns, but there have been no fatalities.

“Any witnesses should contact Gwent Police on 101 quoting log number 360 of 11/06/18.

“Residents were quick to help the injured and came out with their hose pipes and cling film. There was a real community feel that people were being cared for.”

A spokesperson for Wales and West Utilities said: “We’re aware of reports of an explosion at a property in the Dan-y-Darren area of Llanbradach, Caerphilly.

“We are supporting the emergency services and working with them to investigate the cause of the explosion.”
