A group of friends, stuck at the top of a quarry, dialled 999 as they hung to a tree to stop them falling.

The three friends, and their dog, got themselves trapped at Risca quarry at around 2.15pm on Saturday, June 30.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) said that one of their control operators remained on the call for 45 minutes while crews found the group. The friends were said to be convinced they would not be located in time.

Firefighters from Risca, as well as rope crews from Malpas and Ebbw Vale, spent two hours rescuing the three friends who were at risk of falling off a ledge on a quarry face above Darran Road.

“Crews were faced with particularly arduous conditions owing to the extreme temperatures, loose shale and steep faces within the confines of the quarry,” SWFRS said.

While nobody was hurt, SWFRS have warned others against entering such hazardous areas.
