Velothon Wales returns to Caerphilly County Borough

News, Sport | | Published: 10:55, Thursday July 5th, 2018.

Velothon Wales comes to the county borough for the fourth year in a row.

Velothon Wales will return to Caerphilly on Sunday, 8 July, and Caerphilly County Borough Council is urging residents to plan ahead.

The event will welcome thousands of recreational cyclists and charity fundraisers for the fourth consecutive year. To allow for cyclists to safely pass through Caerphilly County Borough, a number of road closures will be required across the county.

Residents are being warned of potential disruption as a result of imposed road closures and changes to bus timetables.

The event will enter the county borough in Hafodyrynys before passing through Newbridge, Maesycwmmer, Llanbradach and Caerphilly.

Entering the borough at Hafodyrynys, the race route follows the A472 before proceeding up the Newbridge bypass, through Maesycwmmer, and along the A469 Llanbradach bypass to the Cedar Tree roundabout.

The riders will then head along the A468 to Bedwas Bridge roundabout, into Caerphilly Town Centre along Bedwas Road, and then up through the town and over Caerphilly Mountain to Cardiff.

The affected roads will be closed between 8.30am and 5pm on the day.

There are also significant changes to bus services, including the 25, 26, 50, 56, 151, C16, X15, A, B, and C routes.

A full details of the road closures and changes to bus services can be found at http://www.caerphilly.gov.uk/velothon

We must question is this really good for the area with so many road closures? They all seem to start the same time or within 30 minutes of each other. This will cause travel choas. Its not like it was years ago where no one went out on a Sunday, people tend to work now Sundays this will be mayham.

Indeed, a large number of people will have great difficulty getting to work, a large number of businesses will suffer and a large number of people will be unable to even leave their homes due to road closures. It’s all very well having an event like this but do it well away from built up areas and major traffic arteries.

We will have the same excuses that this brings in money to the borough – nonsense.
All it brings is major disruption.

No it does not bring money into the borough, are these lycra clad cyclists going to stop off for a drink and a bite to eat…..no. They will arrive, do their thing and leave, surely there are more challenging roads well away from built up towns that would be far more suitable for this kind of event. It may only be once a year but the rest of us workers and business owners still have to make a living – will Caerphilly Council give us all our rates and taxes back for Sunday 8th July. I have nothing against the race, but why cause maximum disruption to workers, commuters and business owners when it could be avoided.

The more major the roads the easier it is to provide alternate routes. To take things to extremes, closing a motorway route for example would cause no disruption other than to transfer all the traffic onto local roads.
The event may well be a catch for the region but you’re right, it’s unlikely to boost the borough’s coffers.

Not to mention the rubbish they leave behind with those energy drink sachets the throw on the road!
