A county councillor has landed himself with a shot of winning a UK golfing competition.

Plaid Cymru member Steve Kent, who represents the St Martin’s ward, has made it through to the final of the American Golf UK Long Drive Championship after a qualifying heat in Southampton.

Cllr Kent managed a drive of 349 yards leaving him one step away one step away from reclaiming the Over 45 national title he won in 2015 along with a place in the World Championships in the United States.

Kent, 49, was one of thousands of budding long drivers from all over Europe who entered the event run by nationwide golf retailer American Golf.

He won the first stage qualifying at Cardiff’s American Golf store in March, progressing to regional qualifying where he sent out a 349 yard monster to secure a spot in the final.

Cllr Kent now lines up against the best long drivers in Europe at Chester Racecourse on August 2 to do battle for the national title and the only UK Over 45 qualifying spot for the World Championships in Oklahoma.

After winning the inaugural event in 2015, Cllr Kent has narrowly missed out on the title for the past two years and is keen to regain his title.

He said: “My target for the year is to reclaim the American Golf UK title I won in 2015. This will be my fourth final and I feel in the best condition since I won.

“I just need to turn up with my ‘A game’ and I know I can bring back the title to Caerphilly and make sure Wales is represented at the World Championships. There’s still speed in the old dog yet.”
