A theatre group in Gelligaer has been recognised as one of the finest in the UK at an awards ceremony in Stirling, Scotland.

The Players’ Theatre won the Lord Howard de Walden Trophy for the fourth time in their 41 year history at the British Final Festival of One Act Plays on Saturday, July 8.

The competition was entered by over 500 theatre companies from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The company, who are based in Pengam Constitutional Club, won the award for their performance of The Bridge, written by member Gabe Torrens.

The theatre’s director, Gareth Gibbs, who has been a member for its full 41 year history, said: “We are very fortunate to win this award for the fourth time, more than any other group in Wales.

“It is quite some achievement, and the £1,2000 prize money is a great help.”

The Players have performed in over 80 towns and cities across the UK, as well as appearing in the USA, Canada, Monaco and Korea.

Shirley Betts, Chairperson for the Drama Association of Wales, said: “What a fantastic achievement for a small drama group from Caerphilly to win best British play in this year’s competition in Scotland. I feel very lucky that I was able to be there to see their triumph.”
