A fund set-up in memory of a teenager who died after suddenly collapsing has been named the new charity partner for Sainsbury’s Pontllanfraith.

Jack Thomas was watching Wales play Scotland in the Six Nations in February 2012 when he suddenly collapsed. The 15-year-old died from a suspected undiagnosed heart condition.

The Cardiac Risk in the Young Jack Thomas Memorial Fund was set up by the teenager’s mother June and over the last six years has raised more than £67,000 to pay for defibrillators in schools and free heart screenings for teenagers.

Customers of Sainsbury’s Pontllanfraith chose the charity through a public vote.

Store Manager Kim John said: “Everyone at Sainsbury’s Pontllanfraith is looking forward to working together for a successful partnership.”

June Thomas, pictured below with supermarket staff, added: “We’re delighted to be named the new local charity partner for Sainsbury’s Pontllanfraith.

“We’d like to thank everyone who voted for us, becoming the local charity partner will make a huge difference to us.”
