Memorial garden in Cwmfelinfach to be dedicated as ‘Centenary Field’

News | | Published: 08:11, Friday October 5th, 2018.

A memorial garden in Cwmfelinfach is to be included in a national UK-wide project to commemorate World War One.

Glanynant Memorial Garden will be protected through a legal ‘Deed of Dedication’ between Caerphilly County Borough Council and the Fields in Trust organisation.

Through its Centenary Fields project with the Royal British Legion, Fields in Trust aims to protect parks, playing fields and other recreational space to honour the memory of the millions who lost their lives in the First World War.

Since it was launched in 2014 by the trust’s president, HRH Prince William, more than 2,700 sites have become legally protected from development.

Caerphilly Council’s cabinet approved the dedication of the memorial garden at a meeting on Wednesday, October 3.

A report prepared ahead of the meeting said: “Through this programme, landowners across the UK are being encouraged to dedicate recreational space as a Centenary Field.

“The programme will commemorate this significant milestone in our history and create a tangible local legacy that will be valued by communities for generations to come.

“The authority has 38 war memorials across the county borough which commemorates those who fell in First World War, Second World War and other conflicts.

“The Memorial Garden in Cwmfelinfach has been identified as a suitable site to be dedicated as this authority’s contribution towards the Centenary Fields initiative.”

Cllr Andrew Whitcombe, Armed Forces Champion for Caerphilly County Borough, said: “The Fields in Trust, Centenary Fields programme is an excellent way of commemorating those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Great War.”
