Pwllypant roundabout roadworks will be completed by the end of November, Caerphilly Council has announced

Work on the roundabout is anticipated to be completed before Christmas, if progress to plan.

A £5 million scheme to upgrade the Pwllypant roundabout will finish by the end of next month, Caerphilly County Borough Council has announced.

The works, which started in October last year, will increase capacity at this key strategic location, as well as reduce congestion and improve journey times on the A468/9.

The roadworks had originally been planned to finish within 12 months, but delays due to weather and a rescheduling of lane closures following public anger meant the scheme went on for longer.

Final overnight works are scheduled for Thursday, November 22, between 7pm and 6am, which will bring works on site to a close.

Traffic signals are currently planned to be switched on at the roundabout on Monday, November 26, which will mark the scheme’s completion.

Cllr Sean Morgan, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, said: “While these dates are dependent on weather and any unforeseen events, I’m sure this scheduled completion date for the scheme will be welcomed by all concerned.

“We were obviously very conscious that the programme had extended beyond the originally scheduled 52 weeks, due both to circumstances beyond our control, and changes made to single lane running after listening to concerns from residents and businesses.

“Local traders will now be able to take full advantage of the busy pre-Christmas trading period with no disruption. It’s pleasing that the council and contractor have been able to ensure that, weather permitting at least; the works will draw to a close before the end of November.

“The works have undoubtedly caused disruption for residents, motorists and the business community, and I must thank everyone for their patience while these important works were carried out.”

The new traffic signal system is designed to self-manage and balance flows between all the junctions.

The council has said there will be a bedding-in period over the first few weeks while the system gathers information to avoid excessive queuing.
