GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN: Stephen Davies pays his respects

A school caretaker from Aberbargoed has spoken of his experience of cycling to the Somme battlefields of northern France to raise money for SSAFA – the Armed Forces charity.

Stephen Davies, 56, who works at Ysgol Bro Sannan, set off on his epic 250-mile three-day journey at the end of August this year. Mr Davies also took part in a similar ride two years ago.

Originally born in Cefn Fforest, Mr Davies joined the Army in 1986 and served with The Royal Regiment of Wales and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Royal Regiment.

He said: “The ride was over 250 miles in three days. We stayed at Amiens and each day would cycle 80 miles visiting various resting places of men and boys in the war cemeteries of the Somme.

“The final day’s visit was to the Glade of the Armistice.

“I have raised over £2,500 and would like to thank all my sponsors. It was a great privilege to be able to attend the cemeteries of the Somme and say thank you to all.

“A large wreath was provided by Bargoed Town Council and presented to me by the Lord Lieutenant of Gwent. It was then laid at Thiepval, on behalf of the community of Caerphilly Borough.”
