A Caerphilly kickboxing and karate club has won 33 medals and produced six world champions at a World Championships in Athens, Greece.

The Welsh Contact Karate Association Caerphilly club competed in a variety of martial arts contests as part of the championships last month.

The club won 11 gold medals representing Wales, finishing the competition in sixth place out of 38 competing countries.

They also won 14 silver medals and 8 bronze medals, with 32 fighters from the club taking part in the competition.

The club has members of all ages, ranging from children as young as four to adults.

Classes are led by Steve Bevan, who is a fourth degree black belt, at Hengoed Community Centre and Trecenydd Community Centre.

Mr Bevan told Caerphilly Observer: “I was over the moon with everyone’s performance and for them all to come away in medal positions was a credit to them.”

“They have put in so much hard work throughout the weeks and months leading up to the World Championships. They have given up their Saturdays to get extra training in and competed in competitions across the UK. I am one very proud instructor.”

He added: “We will be back at it again in January to get ready for the world championships in Austria in October.”
