A blue plaque commemorating Freemasonry in Bargoed has been unveiled

A blue plaque has been unveiled to commemorate the history of Freemasonry in Bargoed.

The plaque, which has been placed at Bargoed Masonic Temple, honours the history of Freemasonry in the community, which dates back 72 years.

Ken Verlander, of Gelligaer Lodge, joined Marc Lewis, who is the South Wales Assistant Provincial Grand Master, to unveil the Blue Plaque.

Both the Gelligaer Lodge and the Ystrad Mynach Lodge have been meeting monthly at Cardiff Road, Bargoed since 1974.

Mr Lewis said: “The Blue Plaque will be a constant reminder to us of our heritage and our future. We are very proud of the role we play in our local community and in providing charitable assistance where we can. We welcome any enquiries from the public and from anyone interested in becoming a Freemason.”

The Freemasons are a charitable organisation which, nationwide, have raised more than £100 million over the last ten years. This makes the organisation one of the largest charitable groups in the UK.

South Wales Freemasons are celebrating 300 years of Freemasonry within the United Grand Lodge of England.

As part of the celebrations, they have been placing blue plaques in a number of masonic halls across South Wales.

Freemasonry in South Wales can be traced back to 1754.
