Lillian Rose Howitt enjoys a celebratory birthday meal

A Cefn Fforest resident has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Lillian Rose Howitt was born prematurely on November 20, 1918, weighing only 1.5lbs.

The Great-Great-Grandmother was so small when she was born she was fed with a fountain pen.

Mrs Howitt says that her longevity was predicted by a fortune teller she visited when she was young.

Her son, Stephen Howitt, said: “She’s a lovely woman who would do anything for you and she’s well liked by everyone.

“People always stop me and ask: ‘How’s your mother?'”

She has three children, five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Mrs Howitt was one of nine siblings, all of which she has outlived. Her father was a miner at Britannia Pit and paid £200 for the house she was born in more than a century ago.

One of her earliest memories was receiving the cane at school – but still to this day maintains her innocence.

She said: “I was tapped on the shoulder by the pupils sitting behind me and I turned around. The teacher caught me and gave me the cane. My father wasn’t best pleased with me.”

A special cake for a momentous occasion

She was in Belgium during World War II, attending to Army, Navy and Air-force officers, when she met her late husband, Bob Howitt. The pair got married in 1945 and were married for 63 years.

Mrs Howitt’s favourite hobby is playing cards. She enjoys playing regularly with family and according to her daughter-in-law Cheryl Howitt, “she very often wins.”

Mrs Howitt, who only drinks alcohol on Christmas Day, told Caerphilly Observer: “I don’t feel old.”
