Caerphilly student shortlisted for prestigious award

News | Rhys Williams | Published: 15:51, Friday November 23rd, 2018.

Luke McRoy-Jones is hoping to win a prestigious national award

Luke McRoy-Jones has been announced as a finalist for a national eye-care award.

The second-year University of Plymouth student, who is from Caerphilly, is one of just three nominees in contention for the Optometry Student of the Year award.

Luke is studying to become an optometrist – someone who specialises in eyesight and eye-care.

The award ceremony will take place in London in January and the winner will be decided by a public vote.

Luke said: “I feel really honoured to have been named as one of three finalists nationally. The Association of Optometrists Awards is a fantastic initiative with some very worthy candidates and I am proud to be part of the shortlist.”

He added: “I am incredibly passionate about optometry and its advances and for my passion to be recognised nationally is really fulfilling. I would really like to thank all my family, friends and colleagues who have been really supportive and have shaped me into the student optometrist I am today.”

Growing up, Luke’s parents both worked in the optical industry. After spending much time going to work with his father when he was younger, Luke decided to pursue a career within the industry himself.

At university, Luke is the President of the optometry society, a course representative and a student ambassador.

During the summer holidays, he works as an optical assistant at Specsavers in Caerphilly.

Anyone can vote in the awards before the deadline on December 12.

To vote for Luke, enter your name and submit before selecting the ‘Student of the Year’ category and following the instructions on the page.
