The Real Ale Farm in Bargoed has been named one of the top four clubs in the country in CAMRA’s Club of the Year awards – the second year in a row that it has made the shortlist.

Formerly the Bargoed RAFA Club, it has been shortlisted for promoting local producers and brewers of real ale, cider and perry. It also hosts a number of charity events and beer festivals. It still maintains close links with the Royal Air Force Association with memorabilia on display.

Housed in the oldest building in Bargoed – the former Gilfach Fargoed Fawr Farm, which dates back to the 17th Century – it is the only Welsh establishment nominated for the award.

The CAMRA Club of the Year competition rewards the pubs and clubs with the “greatest commitment to quality real ale – those which offer a fantastic atmosphere, welcoming surroundings and most importantly, top quality real ale served in great condition.”

Pubs and clubs are nominated by CAMRA branches across the country and judged by a panel of CAMRA members throughout the year.

Keith Spencer, Club of the Year Co-ordinator said: “A club is the ultimate community asset; it is created by the community for the community it serves. This competition is a great way of recognising our clubs and raising awareness about the good work that they do.”

The four finalists were presented with a commemorative plate at the recent Club Mirror Awards.

The winner of the award will be announced in the spring.
