Caerphilly County Borough MPs’ dismay over Brexit vote delay

MPs Wayne David, Chris Evans and Gerald Jones were all set to vote against the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal

Prime Minister Theresa May has delayed the Brexit vote which was due to take place in the House of Commons today (Tuesday, December 11).

The announcement comes despite Downing Street denying numerous times that the vote would be delayed.

Caerphilly MP Wayne David, Islwyn MP Chris Evans and Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney MP Gerald Jones were all set to vote against Mrs May’s deal.

Mr David said: “Theresa May’s decision to pull the vote is an absolute disgrace. It is an insult to democracy. Because she saw that she was going to lose the vote, and lose it badly, she decided not to have the vote. She has gone back to the EU to plead for changes to the agreement but it is clear that Theresa May will come back to the Commons with little, if anything, that is new. She is kicking the can down the road and creating massive and harmful uncertainty. This is a tragedy for this country and extremely harmful to our economy.”

Islwyn’s Mr Evans said: “At the moment things are in flux. The Government does not have an overall majority and cannot rely on their partners in the DUP any longer. At this time it is dangerous for the Tory Government to continue in this way. We need a General Election at the earliest opportunity to elect a Labour government that is able to negotiate the best possible deal for the country.”

Meanwhile, Mr Jones told Caerphilly Observer: “We are witnessing the ongoing fiasco on this government’s handling of Brexit. Many have known for some time that this deal did not have enough support in Parliament. We know that it would make the country poorer and that is one of many reasons why I can’t support it. The PM must now go back to Brussels and renegotiate her failed deal.”
