A 20-year-old from Rhymney has been presented with a Diana Award at a ceremony at City Hall in Cardiff.
Charlotte Thomas, who is a member of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Youth Service, won the award after being nominated by her youth worker.
The award, named after Princess Diana, is awarded to young people for social action or humanitarian work.
Charlotte was presented with the award on November 29.
Inspired by her own battles with mental health, Charlotte spent many hours volunteering in hospitals to support people suffering with anxiety and mental health issues.
Charlotte has worked with the council’s Youth Forum Project to talk with MPs, councillors and headteachers about the importance of positive mental health in schools.
She also organised The Present of Positivity Project through GoFundMe, to help encourage people to use physical objects to support people suffering with anxiety.
Charlotte aims to ensure that every young person will have access to the mental health support that’s needed.
She is currently studying Mental Health Nursing at Coventry University.
Cllr Carl Cuss, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Care and Wellbeing said: “I would like to congratulate Charlotte on her brilliant work in helping to improve the lives and wellbeing of young people that suffer with mental health issues.
“The council’s Youth Service is hugely important in providing advice and support to young people and I am glad we are able to support people like Charlotte who are making such a difference.”
