Ystrad Mynach Police Station is now being used as a full-time custody facility, Gwent Police has announced.
The custody suite had previously been used intermittently since May 2016, when the police force decided to take all detainees to Newport.
The Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert, said: “The reopening of Ystrad Mynach will see officers, particularly those in the most northern parts of our area, back on the streets far quicker, enabling them to return to their primary function of protecting and reassuring the public of Gwent.”
He added: “This move will not only address the increase in demand across Gwent, but also ensure that Gwent Police is delivering the most effective and efficient service it can.”
Deputy Chief Constable Pam Kelly said: “The reopening of Ystrad Mynach Custody suite is a welcome change for those living and working in the west of our force area. Officers and detainees have often been facing long journeys out of their way to Newport Central Station, so the reopening of this suite will allow officers to cut travel times and return to their area in a shorter time.”
