CCTV reveals last movements of child murderer David Gaut before he was killed

The final movements of child killer David Gaut in the hours before he was allegedly murdered have been released by Gwent Police.

The images show 54-year-old Gaut, wearing a white shirt, blue jeans and dark jacket, buying a ticket at Caerphilly railway station at around 11.40am on August 2 last year.

It is alleged that Gaut was attacked and killed at his neighbour’s flat later that day.

David Osborne, 51, and Ieuan Harley, 23, are on trial at Newport Crown Court and are alleged to have killed Gaut after discovering he had served more than 32 years in prison for murdering toddler Chi Ming Shek in 1985.

Gaut was found dead at his flat on Long Row in New Tredegar on Saturday, August 4, last year. The trial has been told how he had been stabbed more than 150 times while he was alive and a further 26 times when he was dead.

The prosecution argue that after being lured to Osborne’s flat – and the pretence of borrowing some DVDs – and killed, the accused then dragged his body back to his flat and later tried to dispose of blood-stained clothes and destroy evidence in a car fire.

Osborne, from Long Row, Elliots Town, New Tredegar and Harley, of no fixed address, deny the murder of Gaut. Harley and Darran Evesham, 47, from Powell’s Terrace, New Tredegar, also deny perverting the course of justice, which Osborne admits.

Evesham has been cleared of murder on the direction of the judge due to a lack of evidence.
CCTV footage of the three defendants has also been released by police detailing their movements on the day Gaut was killed. Harley was at Morrisons supermarket, in Bargoed, at aroun 5pm, Osborne was at Rhymney railway station at 12.30pm, and Harley together with Evesham at a pharmacy at around 12pm.

The trial, which began at Newport Crown Court on January 17, has been told how Gaut claimed he had been jailed for killing a soldier when he moved next door to Osborne, six weeks before his death. However internet searches by neighbours revealed the truth about his past.
