Bargoed RFC have appointed Aled James as their new head coach until the end of the season as they aim to maintain their Principality Premiership status.

In a statement, the club said: “James’ experience and coaching skill set is a welcome addition to the coaching team. He will work alongside the current coaches as they look to get out of the drop zone with some big games on the horizon.”

James’ first game in charge will be an away fixture against Aberavon in the Principality Premiership on Sunday, March 3.

Former Cross Keys player and coach James was appointed on Wednesday, February 27 and replaces the outgoing head coach David Lynch and assistant Gareth Gunter, who both resigned from the club on Saturday, February 16.

A statement posted on the club’s website reads: “Bargoed RFC would like to thank both Dai and Gareth for their hard work over the years, and particularly over the last three seasons in the Principality Premiership.

“Dai has been coaching at Bargoed RFC for an incredible 17 years taking the club through the National Leagues and into the Principality Premiership.

“Gareth has been with Bargoed RFC for nine years firstly for three years as a player and latterly as assistant coach.

“Both were National Championship winners as coaches with Bargoed RFC in the 2014/15 season and were coaching the club during the 2015/16 season when they were promoted to the Premiership.

“Both have sent their best wishes to the players, coaching staff, committee and supporters for the remainder of the season.

“Bargoed RFC send their best wishes to both who have been fine ambassadors for the club during their time in charge.”

The club are currently second from bottom of the Principality Premiership ahead of Neath.
