Volunteers from Caerphilly Angling Club collected 22 sacks of rubbish from Caerphilly Castle moat on Sunday, March 3.

Some of the items found  include a traffic cone, a radiator, a shovel, scaffolding poles and a car wheel.

Eighteen volunteers from the angling club and the wider community braved the stormy weather to take part in the clean up.

Andrew Riste, from Caerphilly Angling Club, said: “Over the last few months we’ve noticed lots of litter under the water.

“I suggested that as a club we should clean up, so we go in contact with Keep Wales Tidy, who were really supportive of us.”

“We only did the margins of the moat because of the depth, but we were in water at least 3ft deep.”

Mr Riste, 35, added: “It hammered down with rain all day. It was a nightmare but we soldiered on.

“We started at 9am and were done by 1pm. It was quite a success.

“We split everyone into two teams, with one team going into the water and collecting litter and the other group on land putting the litter into bags.

“It was good fun and we got to meet new people. We were laughing and joking afterwards and had tea, coffee and biscuits together.”

Caerphilly Angling Club have done litter picks around the castle on numerous occasions in the past.

Mr Riste said: “We try and do something at least once a year and will be more cleanups in the future.”

Andrew King, Caerphilly project officer for Keep Wales Tidy, said: “Keep Wales Tidy were proud to support Caerphilly Angling Club with litter picking equipment to clean the moat of Caerphilly Castle.

“It’s great to see the community come together to tackle litter in a difficult location and I want to congratulate all the volunteers for their hard work.”
