A 17-year-old gymnast who trains in Crumlin will be a flag bearer for Great Britain at the 2019 Special Olympics opening ceremony in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Bethany Paull, who trains at Valleys Gymnastics Academy, is one of three British flag bearers chosen from Wales, England and Scotland.

The opening ceremony starts at 3pm on Thursday, March 14.

Bethany, who has learning difficulties, will be competing in the Women’s Artistic events at the games.

Melissa Anderson, head coach at Valleys Gymnastics Academy, told Caerphilly Observer: “We’re unbelievably proud of Bethany.

“It’s a massive achievement for her. Whether or not she comes back with the medals, she’s had a great honour to compete at the games.”

Ms Anderson added: “She has been training hard and she’s very excited.

“It’s a great experience for Bethany to go across the world to compete. She’s never travelled this far before.”

Delighted to announce the three athletes who will lead #TeamSOGB out at the Opening Ceremony. David Carlin (Scotland), Bethany Paull (Wales) and T-Jay Wilson (England) have been selected by the coaching and management team. Check out their incredible tops!
