Bargoed end 14-game losing streak with win against RGC 1404

News, Sport | Rhys Williams | Published: 10:52, Monday March 11th, 2019.

Bargoed beat RGC 1404 on Friday, March 8 to secure their first Principality Premiership win since October.

The 21-17 win comes in just the second game in charge for new head coach Aled James.

The victory at a wet and windy Bargoed Park ends a run of 14 consecutive league defeats for the Bulls.

Bargoed No8 Grant Rogers opened the scoring by crossing over for a try after a powerful scrum.

Josh Prosser’s conversion gave Bargoed a 7-0 lead over their opponents from North Wales.

RGC 1404 battled their way back into the game and dominated possession and territory, but were unable to break through thanks to Bargoed’s resilient defence.

The hosts were dealt a blow when when flanker Callum Davies went off with an arm injury to be replaced by Adam Coupe.

The visitors equalised in the 32nd minute when Aaron Evans burrowed over for a try. Billy McBride’s conversion made it seven apiece until half time.

Bargoed controlled the early stages of the second half and a turnover led to prop Alex Gardner-Key crossing over for a try to put the Bulls back in the lead.

A second conversion for Prosser put the scores at 14-7.

After going behind, RGC 1404 upped their game and began to dominate, but Bargoed’s defensive work rate once again stopped the the visitors from breaching their try line.

A line-out win from Bargoed saw them go through nine phases of attack before centre Darren Humphries cut through to score his team’s third try.

Prosser converted once again to give Bargoed a 21-7 lead and hopes of ending the losing streak with a bonus-point win were in sight.

However, it was RGC 1404 who scored next following a series of pick and drives.

Mei Perry got the try, which was converted by McBride, to ensure a tight finish.

Bargoed refused to buckle under pressure, stopping the away side from adding more points to the board, with the game finishing 21-17 to Bargoed to get a much-needed win.

Bargoed, who remain in 15th place in the table, will be looking to build on this win when they take on relegation rivals Bridgend away from home on Thursday, March 14.
