Maesycwmmer artist’s bid for funding to get wrestling comic published

News | | Published: 13:30, Friday March 15th, 2019.

Josh Hicks’ comics have gained a cult following

A talented comic book artist who has created a universe of wrestling characters has turned to the internet to get publishing funding.

Josh Hicks, 27, from Maesycwmmer, created the Glorious Wrestling Alliance series of comics which follows the quirky behind-the-scenes goings on at the “world’s most glorious wrestling promotion”.

The comics have so far gained a cult following of fans but the series is to come to an end.

For the finale, Josh has decided to create a special final edition to publish in book form.

To finance the venture, he has turned to an internet crowdfunding website to raise £2,500.

An example of Josh Hicks’ work

Josh said: “Over the last few years I’ve poured literally hundreds of hours of energy and passion into these silly pages, and I’m excited to finally finish up this chapter of the GWA’s life and present it in a format that fully justifies all the hard work that went into it.

“Glorious Wrestling Alliance: Premium Special is going to be a beautiful book and I can’t wait to hold it in my arms and rock it back and forth like a little paper baby.

“Going the self-published route means I get full control over design, paper stock and finish, and launching the book on Kickstarter is going to allow me to push the boat out and make it the lavish affair it deserves to be.”

Josh’s other work has already attracted attention from the comic world.

Last year he was named one of six artists to watch by industry website Broken Frontier.
