Helping children to play safe

Some months back Gerald Jones MP and I were presented with a petition by some children and parents in Rhymney about behaviour in the Royal Park children’s play area. Along with local councillors we agreed to take up the issues in the hope that the oversight of the play area can be improved. So it is pleasing to report that with the help of Caerphilly County Borough Council the play area will now have a CCTV camera.

The next stage is to consider whether the current play equipment might be reviewed and standards of equipment upgraded. I have been in touch with ‘Play Wales’ about this and will continue to work on the issue with local councillors.

Rhymney exercise group

I was pleased my office staff could recently help the Rhymney exercise group. This is a great project where people meet regularly for exercise, companionship and to share advice about wellbeing. Good luck to them with their next grant application.

Community safety

There have been a series of community safety events in Phillipstown as community safety partners work with local residents to address local incidents and concerns. We know that the great majority of the local population are law abiding and we must all work together to support each other when problems arise.

We have some great examples of partnership work locally. For example it was my great pleasure to join the “Heddlu Fach” in Ysgol Fochrhiw who are a great example of how local initiatives can succeed. Thanks to the Police and Crime Commissioner, Jeff Cuthbert, and Gwent Police for this pioneering initiative.

Walk For Life – Kidney Wales

It was a joy to walk alongside the river from New Tredegar with members of the local community and Gerald Jones MP to raise funds for Kidney Wales. We know local residents who use the kidney dialysis unit in Merthyr Tydfil so it was good to enjoy some fresh air, clear our heads after the rugby and raise some money for a good cause. It was great to have a special guest – a stormtrooper – who walked the whole route with us!
