Struggling Cross Keys beaten in Llandovery

News, Sport | Rhys Williams | Published: 09:25, Tuesday April 16th, 2019.

Relegation-threatened Cross Keys suffered a 43-21 defeat to Llandovery on Saturday, April 13.

The Principality Premiership club travelled to west Wales for their first game since appealing for £20,000 to help them finish the season.

Llandovery opened the scoring with a 15th minute penalty try at Church Bank, which saw Keys prop Chris Hoskins sent to the sin bin.

The hosts extended their lead in the 23rd minute with a try from scrum-half Dafydd Land, which was converted by Jack Maynard.

Things went from bad to worse for the Keys when centre Tiaan Loots was shown a straight red card in the 27th minute.

Three minutes later, Llandovery scored again when Aaron Warren crossed over for his side’s third try.

The first half ended with the Keys a man down and trailing 19-0.

Three minutes into the second half, second-row Damian Welch scored 14-man Cross Keys’ first try of the game, which was converted by Jacob Botica.

However, moments later, Llandovery’s Morgan Jones scored the bonus-point earning try to increase the deficit to 24-7.

Shortly after, Warren scored his second try of the match, with Maynard’s conversion adding another two points to the scoreboard.

In the 57th minute, Llandovery crossed over for try number six.

But Cross Keys kept battling on and winger Rory Budina scored a try in the 60th minute.

Botica converted to reduce the arrears to 36-14.

But almost immediately after, Llandovery substitute Carwyn Evans scored his team’s seventh try of the day.

Maynard converted to make it 43-14, but the Keys continued to get stuck in.

In the dying moments of the game, Cross Keys substitute Joshua Guy ran in for a try, which was converted by Botica.

However, it was too late for the Keys to grab a fourth try and a bonus point, with the game ending in a 43-21 defeat.

On Saturday, April 20, the Keys make the short trip to Rodney Parade to take on mid-table Newport, with their Principality Premiership status hanging in the balance.
