Caerphilly Fire Station

Caerphilly Fire Station will be opening its doors to the public as part of an on-call recruitment campaign on Saturday, April 27.

Anyone interested in joining the fire service will be able to have a tour of the station, view live demonstrations and ask the crew questions.

The event, which starts at 11am and finishes at 3pm, will also give people a chance to try their hand at a number of activities, such as the firefighting physical and practical assessments.

The service are also hoping to use the event to recruit more on-call firefighters.

Caerphilly Station Commander, John Treherne, said: “My hope from the event is that we are able to raise awareness amongst the general public of what the On-Call Firefighter role entails, its importance to the local community and dispel any myths around the entry requirements. But most of all I hope we receive a number of applications as we are looking to increase our On-Call establishment figures significantly.”

He added: “This is a paid role, there are no formal qualifications or previous experience required to apply and there is no upper age limit.”

“On-Call Firefighters must live or work within the local community and must be within a five minute response time to the station. The role can be performed alongside other education or employment. For more information on the role, salaries, the range of contracts available and eligibility and medical requirements, an on-call firefighter information booklet can be downloaded from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service website.

“We also encourage anyone that may be interested in the on-call firefighter role and would like more information to attend the station’s drill night, which takes place every Wednesday evening from 6:30pm – 8:30pm.”

Mr Treherne replaced Steve Logan as the station commander at the start of 2019 and said: “I was born and grew up in Caerphilly. My family and friends all live in the area and I feel at home when I’m here. I joined the Fire Service in 2003 and have worked on a few stations over the years. I worked at Caerphilly Station as a Watch Manager for three years from 2013 to 2016 and I’m pleased to be back here as the Station Commander.”

Caerphilly Fire station is located on Waun Fach Street, near Pontygwindy Road.
