Relegated Bargoed beaten at home by Bridgend

The Bargoed pack during a scrum

Relegated Bargoed were beaten 29-0 by Bridgend at home in the Principality Premiership on Saturday, April 27.

Bridgend, who are scrapping with Bedwas to avoid being relegated alongside Bargoed, scored four tries to earn a bonus-point win.

In a windy affair at Bargoed Park, the visitors opened their account when Owen Howe stepped up to score an early penalty.

Bridgend scored their first try of the game after 20 minutes, when Ben Jones drove over the try line after a driving lineout.

Howe converted despite the windy weather to give Bridgend a 10-0 advantage.

Bargoed responded well and applied pressure on their opponents, but a handling error saw them lose the ball and Bridgend went on the attack again.

But the Bulls defended strongly and saw out the rest of the first half without conceding.

Bargoed started the second half well and dominated possession, but sloppy play meant they couldn’t get onto the scoreboard.

The visitors worked their way back into the game as Bargoed’s Grant Rodgers was yellow carded in the 50th minute for an obstruction.

Bridgend took advantage of Rogers’ sin binning when Jones ran over for his second try of the game. Howe converted to increase the lead to 17-0.

The Ravens further increased their lead in the 59th minute. This time it was prop Gheorgie Gaijan who crashed over for Bridgend’s third try.

Once again, Howe’s kicking game was strong and the conversion was slotted through the posts.

The bonus point was earned in the 65th minute when poor defending from Bargoed let Stuart Floyd-Davies score Bridgend’s fourth try of the afternoon.

Howe converted to seal a 29-0 victory for the Ravens, who will be aiming to pip Bedwas and Llanelli to Principality Premiership survival.

The Bulls will be hoping for a better performance next time round when they welcome Pontypridd to Bargoed Park at 2.30pm on Saturday, May 4 in the penultimate game of the season.
