A Caerphilly man has been jailed for a total of 48 weeks for assaulting three police officers and one other person.

Tyrone Birkett, 34, of no fixed abode, appeared before Newport Magistrates’ Court on May 1 and admitted four counts of assaults. The court was told how Birkett assaulted two police detectives and one other man in Caerphilly town on April 30 and then another police officer at Ystrad Mynach Police Station while he was in custody on May 1.

He also admitted damaging a pair of glasses belonging to one of the detectives and stealing items from two shops at the Castle Court Shopping Centre. These were items worth around £220 from Claire’s Accessories and two build your own crane sets worth £8 from The Works.

For each assault he was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison. Three of the four sentences will run consecutively while one will run concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of 48 weeks in prison.

Birkett was ordered to pay a total of £445 in compensation and £85 in prosecution costs.

In addition to the thefts and assaults, Birkett also pleaded guilty to breaching a community order after he failed to attend an appointment with the Gwent Alcohol and Drugs Service and the Probation Service. The order was made by magistrates after Birkett admitted stealing £11.61 worth of food from the Chequered Flag Petrol Station in Trethomas back in February this year.
