Gelligaer woman jailed after smuggling drugs into Cardiff prison

News | | Published: 10:14, Monday May 20th, 2019.

Michaela Jones

A mum-to-be has been jailed after she was caught on CCTV smuggling drugs into Cardiff Prison.

Michaela Jones, 26, of Greenhill Place, Gelligaer, was seen passing a cling film wrap to then prisoner boyfriend Ryan Jones when she visited him on October 30 last year.

The wrap was later found to contain fragments of the depressant diclazepam and 4.2g of tobacco.

She was caught on camera taking the wrap from her left trouser pocket and putting it on the table before Ryan Jones took it and put it in his shoe. Michaela was arrested after the visit ended when prison guards searched Ryan.

At a sentencing hearing earlier this month, Cardiff Crown Court was told how Michaela had turned to alcohol following a series of family bereavements. She told probation officers she was fearful of the repercussions from her abusive boyfriend if she did not smuggle the package in.

She has since split up with him and has started a new relationship. The court was told how she is in the early stages of pregnancy and is attempting to tackle her alcohol addiction.

Jones was sentenced to six months imprisonment.
