Pupils at Ystrad Mynach Primary School taking part in ‘dementia friends’ training

Children at Ystrad Mynach Primary School have received training to become ‘dementia friends’.

Year Five pupils, aged nine and ten, took part in a training session on Wednesday, April 29 to help them improve their understanding of dementia.

The intergenerational project, which is the first of its kind, will see people with dementia visit the school to take part in weekly creative sessions.

The sessions, which include music, drama and craft activities, are being run by Caerphilly Arts Development, in partnership with Ystrad Mynach Primary School, Aneurin Bevan Health Board and Page to Stage Wales.

Bethan Ryland, who works for Caerphilly Arts Development, said: “We hope this project will encourage more schools to become dementia friendly and do projects like this to increase empathy, challenge stigma and stereotypes, be creative and bridge the generation gap.”
