Ysgol Cwm Derwen’s netball team celebrate their cup win

Pupils from a school in Oakdale have won the Wales National Primary Schools Netball competition.

Ysgol Gymraeg Cwm Derwen travelled to Merthyr Tydfil on May 2 and beat 14 other schools from across Wales to win the tournament.

Despite losing their first game to Cardiff’s Howells School, they went on to win their next two games against Mynydd Cynffig and Ysgol Gwenffrwd.

After then drawing to Dyffryn-y-Glowyr, the Oakdale-based school won their final two games against St Michaels and Oystermouth to advance to the semi-finals.

The side beat West Park 9-5 to advance to the final, where they avenged their earlier defeat to Howells School by beating them 6-4 in added time to win the competition.

The school qualified for the competition by making it through the Caerphilly Regionals and then the South East Wales Regionals.

Ysgol Gymraeg Cwm Derwen head teacher, Kathryn Matthews, said: “We are absolutely thrilled with the success of the team and we would like to thank Mrs Morris and the team for all their hard work.”

Welsh Netball’s Events and Competitions Officer, Tori Roberts-Burt, said “I would like to congratulate Cwm Derwen on winning the National Primary Schools Competition. It was an intense day of closely contested netball matches and the standard of this year’s finalists was excellent. The final went into added time and Cwm Derwen showed exceptional concentration and resilience to take the win.”

Cllr Philippa Marsden, Cabinet Member for Education and Achievement said: “I must congratulate Ysgol Gymraeg Cwm Derwen for their brilliant achievement of winning first place in the Wales National Primary Schools Netball competition.

“Their hard work really paid off and they should be really proud of what they have accomplished.”Pupils from a school in Oakdale have won the Wales National Primary Schools Netball competition.
