Allotment open day a success

News | Rhys Williams | Published: 09:59, Thursday June 6th, 2019.

Aber Valley Community Allotment

More than 40 people attended an allotment open day in Senghenydd on Saturday, June 1.

The Aber Valley Community Allotment group held the event as part of the nationwide ‘Have a Grow’ event, which is run by the Social Farms and Gardens organisation.

Allotment group secretary Barbara Turton said: “It was splendid. We were very impressed with the turnout.

“We’ve got things growing in every nook and cranny here and I think people were impressed with what they saw, as well as with the tea and cakes.

“People were taking and sharing advice on growing and exchanging ideas, which was the main aim of the day.”

Mrs Turton added: “There are lots of herbs at the allotments which are in flower at this time of year.

“People were also amazed by the number of bees here.

“The weather was ideal, it was nice and sunny but it wasn’t too hot and there was just enough cloud.

“I think people were able to get something out of the event, so we’re very pleased.”

The community allotment, which is near the National Mining Memorial, has been open for 15 years.

Mrs Turton said: “Not many people know we’re here, so it was good to do some networking.

“We’ll look forward to doing another event like this next summer.”
