A gala concert will be held at the Vanguard Centre in Caerphilly on Saturday, July 20.

The concert, which has been organised by Only Men Aloud’s David Fortey, will be held to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The show starts at 7pm and will include performances by Welsh National Opera soprano Meriel Andrew, young clarinetist Nathan Isaac and male voice choir Cor Tadau Trisant.

Accompanist Ryan Wood, who has performed alongside Only Men Aloud, Bridgend Male Choir and more, will also perform on the night.

Mr Fortey, who is involved with the management committee of the Vanguard Centre, said: “This concert is part of our annual gala. We’ve held the event for the last three years and raised money for a number of different charities.

“We like to bring in the best artists from outside the area so people can see something new.

“The church can fit 120 people, so hopefully we’ll fill it – It’ll be a wonderful concert.”

During the concert, there will be a raffle, with prizes such as wine and chocolate up for grabs, as well as a variety of prizes donated by local businesses.

There will also be refreshments such as tea, coffee and wine available during the event.

Mr Fortey said: “We’re working hard to make the Vanguard Centre dementia-friendly, as a number of people who come to watch our shows have dementia or Alzheimer’s.

“The Alzheimer’s Society is a good cause to support.”

The event, officially called the David Hawthorn Memorial Gala Concert, is named in honour of the late Vanguard chairman David Hawthorn, who passed away in 2016.

Mr Fortey said: “David Hawthorn was a real lover of music and the arts and, in his capacity as Chairman of the Vanguard Centre, was the first person to congratulate and show his appreciation to any visiting artist on behalf of all at Vanguard and the local community.

“His dedication and commitment not only to the Vanguard Centre but also to the local community as a whole was second to none. Even though I only had the privilege of knowing David for a few years, he certainly left his mark on all who met him and it has been such an honour to arrange this concert in his memory.

“It’s the kind of concert that he would have loved to have attended and I’m delighted that on the day local dignitaries including Wayne David MP, Hefin David AM and Gwent PCC Jeff Cuthbert will be in attendance to support the event.

“Last year’s gala concert raised £1,200 in support of The Tommy Cooper Society and the money raised was sufficient for them to purchase and donate a defibrillator to the Caerphilly Miners’ Centre for the community.”

The show is expected to last around two hours, including a refreshment break.

Mr Fortey said: “People can get tickets at the door, but booking in advance would be preferable.”

Tickets for the event cost £12, with food and drink included in the price.

Tickets can be bought in advance by calling the box office on 02920 866578.
