16 appear in court following police drug raids

A total of 16 people have been charged with supplying Class A drugs after Gwent Police carried out raids in the area in the early hours of Tuesday, June 11.

Five defendants from Caerphilly County Borough, are due to appear in Newport Magistrates’ Court today (Thursday, June 13), while seven from the county borough area appeared in court yesterday (Wednesday, June 12).

More than 180 officers took part in the raids, which began at 4am and were part of Gwent Police’s Operation Jigsaw, which targets serious and organised crime.

Raids were carried out primarily across the borough, with addresses in Rhymney, Hengoed, Nelson, Bargoed, Pontlottyn, Oakdale, Pontllanfraith and Newbridge all raided.

There were also raids carried out in Abertillery and Trelewis.

Class A drugs, including crack cocaine and heroin, were seized during the raids and will be sent away for forensic examination.

Defendants in court on Wednesday, June 12

  • Ben Stead, 25, of High Street, Rhymney, admitted four charges of supplying Class A substances under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Newport Crown Court on July 10.
  • Angharad Simmonds, 25, of High Street, Rhymney, admitted two charges of supplying Class A substances under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. She was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Newport Crown Court on July 10.
  • David Griffiths, 57, of Gelligroes Road, Pontllanfraith, admitted three charges of supplying Class A substances under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Newport Crown Court on July 10.
  • Robert Plant, 37, of West View Crescent, Trelewis, admitted two charges of supplying Class A substances under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Newport Crown Court on July 10.
  • Joanne Zoe James, 42, of Pen-y-Craig, Penpedairheol, admitted two charges of supplying Class A substances under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. She was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Newport Crown Court on July 10.
  • Carl Yemm, 52, of Trosnant Crescent, Penybryn, admitted three charges of supplying Class A substances under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Newport Crown Court on July 10.
  • Gavin James, 39, of Llwyn-yr-Eos, Nelson, did not a enter a plea. He has been released on bail and a trial date is yet to be set.
