Caerphilly Angling Club has held an open event in an attempt to inspire the anglers of the future.

Ten children aged between eight and 14-years-old took part in the event at Castle View lake on Wednesday, June 12, with parents also taking part.

Despite none of the children having any previous fishing experience, they all managed to catch at least one fish each.

Caerphilly Angling Club chairman Andrew Riste, 35, said: “Everyone who attended said they are interested in joining the club.

“At the start some of the children were complaining about the cold weather but it was amazing to see their interest grow after they made their first catches.

“With government-funding from Sport Wales, we’re aiming to get more equipment to get these kids out the house and doing something positive.”

Mr Riste, who has been a member of the club for 20 years, added: “To be honest I was only expecting a handful of people to turn up, so I was really shocked when we had around 25 people show up all together.

“It was perfect. Everyone had enough time to be taught.

“We’ll definitely be looking at doing something like this again in the future.”

Mr Riste also explained how they are aiming to attract younger members to ensure the club can continue to run for years to come.

He said: “We’re looking to progress all the time. However, we’ve had a big drop in the number of junior members over recent years so the club are pushing to attract new members.”

Currently, the club, which was established in 1952, has more than 300 members.

The club has leases to fish on Caerphilly Castle moat, Castle View lake, part of the Rhymney river near Bedwas and part of the River Wye in Monmouth.

Mr Riste said: “I’m quite proud of how the event turned out. It was quite stressful to organise but our tutors stepped up to the plate and helped a lot. I really enjoyed it.”
