Go Connect are running a range of free digital skills workshops for adults as part of Adult Learners Week from June 17 through to June 28.

The sessions will cover a wide range of topics from basic digital literacy and online safety through to more innovative areas such as coding and gaming. They will be fun and engaging and tailored to meet the needs of less-advantaged groups in the community.

Our aim is to introduce them to the modern software and technologies that can not only boost their employability but can also have a positive influence to help break down barriers in their social and personal lives.

What makes this project stand out however, is that we will deliver the activities with the support of young adults who are currently engaging with us on our existing projects – this will empower them to pass on their skills and knowledge to others and help build much-needed positive relationships within isolated communities.

We’ll be collaborating with a range of services and support teams including Caerphilly Regeneration Teams. Libraries and job centres to run workshops out of Rhymney, Cefn Hengoed, Lansbury Park, Risca and Blackwood.

The activity will take place during Adult Learners Week (June 17 to June 21) with follow up sessions occurring from June to June 28. Our Activities and events can be found here: https://adultlearnersweek.wales.

The need for this activity has been identified through our close working relationships with supporting services in these areas where we run programmes for younger adults to boost employability and enhance their social mobility. Consultations with these community partners along with feedback from those who fall within these less-advantaged groups have highlighted the need for an innovative digital skills provision that can help address a range of issues such as high levels of unemployment and social isolation as well as inspiring and motivating them to take this learning further and encouraging them back into education, training or employment.

Our aim is to educate and inform those most at risk of long-term disengagement and isolation to boost confidence and self-esteem and to encourage engagement and progression onto other meaningful community projects. These activities will allow us to have conversations with groups of adults we wouldn’t normally have access to and from which we can offer advice and information, as well as signposting to suitable progressive opportunities.

By taking the delivery to them we are breaking down a number of barriers to engagement and giving people a chance to try something new and to gain skills and knowledge that they can take away and use at home. For example, we will run sessions on online safety and insights into online gaming and social media so parents can better understand their child’s interests and be more informed of the benefits, as well as the dangers, of their use. We will also run intergenerational sessions and help older groups improve their digital literacy and use technology to address issues around loneliness.
