Wheelbarrows at Caerphilly Flower Festival

The Caerphilly Flower Festival is set to return this weekend (Friday, June 21 to Sunday, June 23).

The annual event, which has been running since 2006, will see an array of flower displays pop up across Caerphilly town centre.

Caerphilly Library and Caerphilly Visitors’ Centre will both host floral displays, as will a number of churches across the town.

Banners promoting the event have gone up around town

The churches taking part in the flower festival are:

  • United Reform Church, Van Road.
  • Presbyterian Church, Windsor Road.
  • Caerphilly Connect Life Pentecostal Church, Crescent Road.
  • Wesley Methodist Church, Crescent Road.
  • St Helen’s Catholic Church, Nantgarw Road.
  • Bethel Congregational Church, Nantgarw Road.
  • Mount Carmel Church, Pontygwindy Road.
  • St Catherine’s Church, Mill Road.

St Catherine’s Church on Mill Road is taking part

There will also be a floral display at the The Malcolm Uphill pub on Cardiff Road.

Meanwhile, the Twyn Community Centre will host displays from Caerphilly and District Floral Society, Caerphilly Horticultural Society and Glynderi Bonsai Club.

Marjorie Gray, flower arranger at Mount Carmel Church, said: “Every venue has chosen their own theme so it will be a delightful and exciting journey going from one church to the next venue.

“To stage these displays takes a great deal of time and effort and yet we find every year that so many people in the area have no idea it is actually taking place.”

The festival is funded by Caerphilly Town Council.

Cllr James Fussell, who serves on Caerphilly Town Council, said: “Caerphilly Flower Festival enhances our town centre and draws people into town.

“It kicks off our summer events – there are events in Caerphilly town centre nearly every weekend after.

“It’s a great opportunity for churches to open their doors, welcome people and show off their flower displays.

“A lot of work goes into organising the event.”

An official tour of the flower displays starts at 11.30am on Friday at the Twyn car park and will go ahead regardless of the weather.

The festival takes place during Caerphilly in Bloom, which runs between May and September each year.

As part of Caerphilly in Bloom, 76 hanging flower baskets have been put up around the town centre, as well as 51 trough planters.

Cllr Fussell said: “All we need now i for the sun to come out.”
