A walk organised by disability charity Sense, will take place in Caerphilly

A fundraising walk to raise awareness of complex disabilities will take place in Caerphilly on Wednesday, June 26.

The walk will begin at 12.30pm and will start and finish at Sense Cymru’s TouchBase centre in Caerphilly Business Park.

TouchBase, Caerphilly

The two-mile walk, which is expected to take between 60 and 90 minutes, will see participants head to Caerphilly Castle and back.

The walk will be led by people with complex disabilities in a call for greater visibility for disabled people in the community and wider society.

Refreshments such as tea and cake will be provided to participants after the walk has finished.

Jon Stubbs, Sense Community fundraiser and organiser of the walk said: “It’s really exciting that Caerphilly is taking part in ‘Sense Walks’ during Deafblind Awareness Week, to raise awareness of people with complex disabilities in the community. We encourage local people to join us in this wonderful initiative.”

The ‘Sense Walks’ initiative was developed by disability charity Sense and coincides with Deafblind Awareness Week, which starts on Monday, June 24.

TouchBase Cymru opened in Caerphilly in March 2016 and provides daycare for people with complex disabilities such as learning difficulties, cerebral palsy and visual and hearing impairments.

The centre has a sensory garden, two sensory rooms, a music room, a dark room, an independent living kitchen, two large activity rooms, a soft play area, pamper suite, and an inclusive technology suite.

The centre employs 35 members of staff and around 30 people use the service each day.

Anyone is welcome to take part in the walk. To sign up, visit the Sense website.
