The B&Q store on Gallagher Retail Park, Caerphilly has donated more than £100 worth of plants to the National Mining Memorial in Senghenydd.

Shrubs, flowers and lavenders were among the donations.

Penyrheol councillor Lindsay Whittle, who is the chair of the Aber Valley Heritage Group, accepted the donation and said: “We’ll reap the benefits of this donation in the future when the plants flower.

“It’s already a serene place to visit. But it’s not just a garden, it’s a heritage museum too.

A B&Q spokesperson said: “Our team at B&Q Caerphilly were delighted to help the National Mining Memorial in Senghenydd with their recent garden makeover by donating a number of plants, shrubs and lavenders.”

Cllr Whittle became chair in March, replacing the late Jack Humphreys, who died in January and was instrumental in bringing the National Mining Memorial to Senghenydd, which opened in October 2013 – 100 years after the Universal Colliery disaster.
