Staff from a nursery in Caerphilly town centre have raised more than £1,800 for a blood cancer charity.

Sixteen members of staff from Abigail’s Day Nursery walked to the top of Pen-y-Fan on Saturday, June 22 to raise money for Bloodwise.

The charity was chosen after the mother of a member of staff was diagnosed with lymphoma, which is a type of blood cancer.

Abigail Harris, company director at the nursery, said: “We were aiming to raise £1,000, so we’ve smashed our target.

“The walk was really good. The weather was really nice, we were lucky.

“We started the walk at 9am and were done and dusted by 12pm.

“It was harder than we expected and it was getting warmer as the morning got on.”

Ms Harris added: “It was a good team building exercise – we had food and drink afterwards and everyone seemed to enjoy it. It was lovely.

“We’d definitely like to do something like this again in the future.”

On the day before, the nursery held a raffle, which raised £720.

Prizes included restaurant and hair salon vouchers, afternoon teas and more.

Ms Harris said: “We contacted local businesses to donate raffle prizes. We had more than 50 prizes – it was unbelievable how much was donated.”

Kirsty Campbell, senior regional relationship manager at Bloodwise, said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Abigail’s Day Nursery for taking on this challenge and to all who have supported their amazing fundraising.

“Blood cancers are the third biggest cancer killer in the UK. The money raised will help fund research into more effective treatments, keeping more families together.”
