Talented rugby player Owen Bennett, who has died at the age of 20

Caerphilly RFC is holding a memorial rugby match in honour of hooker Owen Bennett, who died on Monday, July 22 aged just 20.

The game, which will see a Caerphilly Select XV take on Benny’s Baa Baas XV, will kick-off at 1pm on Sunday, August 4 at Virginia Park.

Entry will cost £3 for adults and £1 for children. All proceeds will go to Owen’s family.

It has been confirmed that television presenter Matt Johnson, who is originally from Abertridwr and is a former Caerphilly youth player, will be playing in the match.

Meanwhile, Scarlets and ex-Wales winger Tom James, who was born in Rhymney, will be in attendance.

Owen rose through the ranks of Caerphilly RFC playing his junior, youth, and finally senior rugby at the club. He had recently joined Nelson RFC and had been due to star for the team this coming season in the Division One East league.

Owen, who had played for the Dragons at Under 16 and Under 18 level, also represented his school – Ysgol Gyfan Cwm Rhymni – and had spells at Bargoed RFC and Aber Valley Wolves.

Caerphilly RFC opened its Virginia Park ground on Monday (July 22) for anyone affected by Owen’s death to attend. A counsellor from charity 2 Wish Upon A Star also attended.

Thank you everyone for all your kind words and memories of Benny. Owen’s friends and family will hopefully be able to find comfort in the thought that he was held in such high esteem by all ? We would like to thank @2wishupon for their support last night.
