Gardening group recognised for community-building efforts

News | | Published: 18:30, Saturday August 3rd, 2019.

The Clos Dinas Growers

A gardening group founded to help foster a new community spirit has been recognised with an award.

Clos Dinas Growers was honoured in the Community Action Awards of TPAS Cymru – the Tenant Participation Advisory Service.

The Trethomas group was founded by resident Charley Lloyd-Grayson for the new United Welsh housing association development.

Tenants, and their children, created a thriving allotment for the community to enjoy.

They organised the build of six raised beds, a bench and a shed and had a very successful first growing season, with local children growing fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowers and plants to donate to neighbours throughout the community.

The allotment has also been a base to teach children about recycling, the important of conserving water and sharing and gives them a safe place to enjoy.

In addition to the TPAS Cymru award, the group has also recently won a United Welsh Together Award. To recognise the children for their efforts, Ms Lloyd-Grayson held a special event for the group at Bedwas and Trethomas Community Hall.

Children were presented with medals by Bedwas, Trethomas, and Machen councillor Liz Aldworth.

Cllr Aldworth said: “The whole project has been brought together by Charley Lloyd-Grayson who has worked alongside the children, encouraging them to be interested in allotment gardening.

“I was proud to be present and to support a wonderful community champion such as Charley and the wonderful children.”

Ms Lloyd-Grayson said: “The children have been amazing.”
