Gilfach Bowls Club win Welsh Open Triples Championship

Competitors from Gilfach Bargoed Bowls Club have won the Welsh Open Triples Championship.

Carl Mounty, 38, Carl Wood, 31, and Kristian Krocker, 21, sealed the victory with a 26-6 final win in Llandrindod Wells.

The win is the second time the club has won the Open Triples Championship in its 91-year history.

The trio’s journey to the final started in May, where they advanced through the South Glamorgan regional qualifiers to reach the competition finals.

On Tuesday, August 13, the team knocked out competitors from Monmouthshire and the Vale of Glamorgan to book their place in the semi-finals.

A narrow 14-13 semi-final victory on Saturday, August 17, saw the trio reach the final, where they brushed aside their opponents to become champions.

Krocker said: “It feels amazing to win a national competition with close friends.

“We kept in mind our great friend and family member Paul Mullins, who recently passed away.

“Paul was a great bowler and won a Welsh Open Singles competition in the 1980s.”

Krocker added: “Throughout the early stages of the competition we all felt we were on top form.

“We knew if we carried on as we were, we had a good chance of winning.

“It’s great to add to the history of the club and to get a local club out on the national stage.

“We’re a small village club but we’re competing with some of the biggest clubs in Wales.”

Krocker began playing bowls when he was 13-years-old and even quit rugby so he could fully focus on the sport, a decision he now says he’s “glad” to have made.

After their triples win, Krocker, Wood and Mounty will all represent Wales at the British Isles Bowls Championships in June 2020.

The competition will take place in Llandrindod Wells and will see Wales compete with England, Scotland, Ireland, Jersey and Guernsey.

The club is currently on the lookout for new players to join its ranks.

The club has both a men’s and a women’s team, with around 40 players at the club in total.
