Marjorie Evans has celebrated her 100th birthday

A great-grandmother from Pontllanfraith has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Marjorie Evans celebrated the landmark birthday with a party at Blackwood rugby club, attended by a small group of friends and family.

Born Marjorie Thomas on September 4, 1919, Mrs Evans has spent nearly all her life living on the street she was born – Llanarth Road.

Mrs Evans has been described by her son, Ingli Evans, as a “marvellous mother”.

Mr Evans, 75, said: “She’s always looked after me. I wouldn’t know what to do without her.”

Mrs Evans worked in an armaments factory in Rogerstone during WWII, which began three days before her 20th birthday.

Following the birth of her son in 1944, Mrs Evans stopped working at the factory.

During WWII, Mrs Evans married her husband Raymond Evans, who was from Cwmgelli, near Blackwood.

The couple were married until 1989, when Raymond died aged 75.

The couple had one son together, as well as one grandchild, four step-grandchildren and a step-great grandchild.

Following the end of the war, Mrs Evans spent 20 years working as a cleaner at Pontllanfraith Junior School, the school Mrs Evans attended as a child.

Speaking about his mother’s longevity, Mr Evans said: “She looks after herself. She’s from old farming stock.”

Despite spending her whole life living in Pontllanfraith, Mrs Evans’s father came from Presteigne, in Powys, while her mother was from Hay-on-Wye, also in Powys.

Mrs Evans was described by her step-granddaughter, Chantelle Withey, as “a wonderful lady”.

Ms Withey said: “She’s still very independent and interacts with the community, friends and family.

“A thoughtful and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who still enjoys life.”
