Eight-try Bedwas brush aside Ystalyfera

Bedwas’ Owen Ford looks for a way through the Ystalyfera defence

Bedwas’ winning start to the season continues after a crushing victory over Ystalyfera on Saturday, September 28.

Bedwas won 52-13 at the Bridgefield to make it three wins out of three in the WRU Championship.

The hosts scored eight tries to secure a bonus-point win.

Jordan Rees scored the first of the eight tries when he ran in from 30 yards to give Bedwas the lead.

Fullback James Hallett missed the conversion as the ball drifted across the posts.

Despite dominating possession, Bedwas’ lead was cut to two points when Ystalyfera’s Steffan Castle slotted home a penalty.

But Bedwas responded when second-rower Craig Hudd was driven over the try line from a close range lineout.

Hallett’s conversion was unsuccessful but Bedwas now led 10-3.

The visitors cut the lead with another penalty kick from Castle, but were reduced to 14 men when flanker Callum Papp was yellow carded for a deliberate knock-on.

Lewis Bowden scored Bedwas’ third try as the hosts made the most of their numerical advantage. Hallett put his kicking woes behind him to score the conversion.

Ill-discipline struck Ystalyfera once again, this time hooker Ryan James was sent to the bin for a high tackle as tempers on the pitch began to boil.

Bedwas went into the break with a 17-6 lead.

Bedwas were awarded a penalty try shortly after the game restarted. Referee Craig Evans judged a Bedwas driving maul to have been illegally halted.

As a result, second-rower Jesse Patton became the third Ystalyfera player to be sent to the sin bin.

This was soon followed by try number five, which was scored by hooker Mike Dacey and extended upon by the boot of Hallett.

With the game long finished as a contest, Bowden scored his second try of the game in the 67th minute.

Hallett kicked the two extra points and Bedwas now led 38-6.

Soon after, Matt Williams got in on the act to score his first try in the black and white of Bedwas. Hallett extended his tally for the afternoon with the conversion.

But while Bedwas continued to attack the opposition, Ystalyfera winger Luc Caines intercepted a pass and ran across the pitch to dive under the posts for a try. Caines then scored the conversion to bring his side’s tally to 13 points.

However, Bedwas had the final say when Bradley Williams danced through a tiring opposition defence to score the final try of the afternoon.

Hallett converted to complete the 52-13 rout.

On Saturday, October 5, Bedwas travel to the Gnoll to face Neath as they look to build on their winning form in the WRU Championship.
