Boxer Lauren Price gets world championship campaign underway with win

Lauren Price is competing in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships

Middleweight boxer Lauren Price has got her AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships campaign underway with a win against Saweety Boora of India.

Price, 25, from Bargoed, beat Boora in a split decision on Tuesday, October 8 in Ulan Ude, Eastern Siberia – more than 4,200 miles from Bargoed’s Hanbury Square.

Price is now preparing for her 75kg quarter-final clash with Lithuania’s Iveta Lesinskyte on Thursday, October 10.

Commonwealth and European champion Price won a bronze medal at the championships last year and will be looking to add yet another gold medal to her collection in Russia.

In the last 18 months, Price has won a medal in every competition she has competed at.

However, Price did not compete at the European Championships this year, choosing to focus on the world championships following her success at the European Games in Belarus in June.

Price defeated the reigning champion, middleweight Nouchka Fontijn of the Netherlands, to clinch the gold medal at the games.

She said: “Winning the European Games earlier this year was a really big achievement, particularly as I defeated the boxer that had beaten me in the World Championships semi-final last year.

“I took a lot of confidence from that win and I am now looking to take that into this year’s world championships.

“Not going to the European Championships has given me a good break and a chance to work on a few things in the gym.

“I am ready to go again now and looking forward to getting back in the ring again and putting in a strong performance ahead of the Olympic qualifying campaign which starts next year.”

Price is one of seven women representing Team GB in the championships, which began on Thursday, October 3 and will conclude on Sunday, October 13.

The boxers arrived in Russia at the end of September to prepare for the games.
