Pupils from Lewis School Pengam and residents at a Nelson care home met with the Duchess of Cornwall in London as part of a poetry initiative.

Five pupils teamed up with two Trafalgar Park care home residents for the Poetry Together project, which sees school pupils and elderly people recite poetry together.

The project aims to boost speaking, reading and writing skills among school children and to strengthen memory and relationships for older people.

Trafalgar Park residents Sandra Purnell and Gerald Mogford were greeted by writer and former MP Gyles Brandreth when they arrived at the event, which was held at Eaton Square School on Wednesday, October 16.

Pupils recited a poem called Friendship, which was written by Trafalgar Park resident Beryl Jones.

After the poetry recitals had finished, residents and pupils met the Duchess of Cornwall and enjoyed afternoon tea with her.

Hayley de la Vega-zabala, wellbeing coordinator at Trafalgar Park, said: “Our residents were honoured to have been included in the Poetry Together initiative, as this has provided them with an additional yet unique way of connecting with the local community.

“The event has been an amazing experience for all who took part, as residents have demonstrated their creative flair and reignited their love for poetry.

“Meeting Camilla was certainly the highlight of the day for many at Trafalgar Park.”
