Ashville Care Home in Brithdir

Caerphilly County Borough Council has reassured the families of a Brithdir care home caught up in police raids that the home “will continue to operate as normal”.

The council’s director of social services, Dave Street, told Caerphilly Observer that relatives of the Ashville Residential Care Home residents have been contacted and reassured.

He also said the council want to make sure the quality of care at the home is maintained.

The home, which has space for 35 residents, was raided by officers from Gwent Police and the National Crime Agency in the early hours of Thursday, November 7 as part of a modern day slavery investigation.

Warrants were also carried out at the Danygraig Nursing Home in Newport.

Police believe that staff at the care homes may be victims of modern day slavery and other related offences.

In total, there are around 70 members of staff working at the two care homes, but it is unclear how many of them may have been victims.

Detective Chief Superintendent Nicky Brain said: “It’s very early days. We’ve worked closely with local authorities and have no concern over the care of residents.

“Three people are in custody and care support is in place.”

DCS Brain also explained that the police are taking the allegations “very seriously”.

A 53-year-old man and a 64-year-old man both from the Newport area and a 43-year-old man from the Surrey area have all been arrested on suspicion of modern day slavery offences.

A reception centre for potential victims has been set up by specialist Gwent Police officers from the force’s Human Trafficking Team.

Anyone with information can contact Gwent Police on 101, quoting reference 1900107421. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
