A Snapchat video of the incident

A video showing fireworks being set off at homeless people inside a tent in Caerphilly town centre has emerged on social media.

The incident is believed to have taken place near Crescent Road car park on Tuesday, November 5.

In a statement, Gwent Police said: “The report of concern comes following a video that has been uploaded onto Facebook showing fireworks set off and targeted towards the tent.

“Following the report, officers have now conducted welfare checks on those we believe may be homeless in the area of Caerphilly.

“We can confirm that no injuries have been reported.”

Caerphilly Inspector, Gavin Clifton, said: “This is reckless behaviour that we will be investigating and it will be dealt with robustly.

“The consequences of this act could have been horrific.”

Morgan Jones ward councillor Jamie Pritchard said: “I was absolutely appalled to see footage of this hideous and cruel attack against what I understand to be rough sleepers in Caerphilly.

“The perpetrators of this crime need to be brought to justice and be made to pay for their actions.

“I’ve reported this attack to the Police and only hope that no injuries have been caused. I’ve also reached out to local support services to see what help can be provided to the victims”.

Cllr Shayne Cook, who also represents the Morgan Jones ward, said: “This horrendous act carried out on a vulnerable member of our community must be condemned.

“The perpetrators must be brought to justice and educated on how their actions have caused distress and harm.”

Anyone with information relating to the incident can contact Gwent Police on 101.
