Thieves ransacked the Furniture Revival over the weekend

A social enterprise which is run to benefit the community of Rhymney has been broken into.

Staff and volunteers of the Furniture Revival were shocked to discover their base had been ransacked some time over the weekend (November 22 to 24).

Thieves damaged a fence and smashed through a window at the premises on the Lawn Industrial Estate, taking two safes containing cash and vehicle keys.

Staff are still counting the financial cost of the break-in and are looking at setting up an online fundraising page while insurance claims go through.

But it is the cost in time and emotion that cannot be compensated for.

Retail and reuse manager Byron James told Caerphilly Observer: “It was obviously not the greatest thing to walk into and we are all shocked.

“But we are disappointed more than anything. We are a social enterprise that is run in the area to help the community.

“To think that someone has taken from their own community is quite sad.”

Furniture Revival is owned by environmental charity Groundwork Wales and refurbishes and sells used furniture with any profit reinvested in the local community. In 2017 it was recognised for its work with a social enterprise award.

In a Facebook post, the company, said: “We take huge pride in supporting Rhymney and the surrounding Valleys for the past 20 years and hope that as a community we can join together, recover what was taken and find justice.

“Please contact us or the police with any information that may help aid this incident. However small or insignificant. We will not let this incident deter us from our commitment to you. Thank you for your support and contributions in helping us alleviate deprivation, improve our community’s health and well-being.”

The Furniture Revival is reliant on donations and can collect reusable household items for refurbishment and resale.
